The Zone is once again preparing for large-scale changes. Today, players will receive two big reasons to return to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl at once – the free “Return to the Zone – Update 2.0” and the first large-scale story expansion Cost of Hope.
The developers have prepared a material with the main information about the release, so below are the most important details without plot spoilers.
Cost of Hope will be the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl. It will be released on August 20, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro. Players will find a new large-scale story, which, according to the authors, can last for dozens of hours.
In addition to the new plot, the expansion will expand the game world with two regions. Among them are the legendary Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the mysterious Iron Forest. There will also be new characters, encounters with familiar heroes, and other innovations that players will be able to learn about directly during the passage.
It is worth paying special attention to the terms of access to the add-on. Owners of the Ultimate Edition or Season Pass for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will not have to purchase Cost of Hope additionally – the DLC is already included in the purchased set.
There are two options for owners of the Standard and Deluxe Edition. They can upgrade to the Ultimate Edition, receiving all the additional benefits of this edition along with the add-on, or purchase Cost of Hope separately.
How to start Cost of Hope
The focus of Cost of Hope will once again be on Skif, and the events of the expansion will take place in parallel with the main storyline of Heart of Chornobyl. After installing the DLC, while playing the game on Skif’s handheld, a signal will be received that will open a new storyline.
The content of Cost of Hope is conventionally divided into two parts. The first will become available shortly after leaving the Small Zone, that is, at an early stage of the passage. The second will open after completing the story mission “Small Incident”.
For those who do not want to complete the main campaign until the right moment, the main menu provides special quick start options:
- New Game → DLC Content → Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope — launch the expansion without having to reach the desired stage yourself.
- Early Start — move to the moment when the first part of the DLC opens.
- Advanced Start — start from a later stage of the main story, where both parts of the expansion are already available.
- During Advanced Start, you can choose Spark or Ward. This decision will only affect the state of the main campaign and will not change the plot of Cost of Hope.
For those who plan to focus on the expansion, the most convenient option will be Advanced Start. Regardless of the chosen starting point, all the features of Update 2.0 will remain available, and the open world will allow you to postpone the DLC at any time and return to free exploration of the Zone.
Duty and Freedom: an old confrontation with new rules
Once irreconcilable rivals, but before the events of Heart of Chornobyl, both factions joined the D4 Treaty – a pact that united all the groups of the Zone. However, the formal agreement could not erase the fundamental differences between them.
For the Duty, the Zone remains a deadly threat that must be destroyed for the safety of humanity. Freedom, on the other hand, holds the opposite position: the faction perceives the Zone as a unique gift, the potential of which must be explored and used for the benefit of people.
Cost of Hope will also expand the map with two large regions – the Iron Forest and the long-awaited Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Each of them is not a separate point on the map, but a large-scale territory with its own hub, numerous locations, quests, activities, dangers and secrets.
Additional places for exploration will also be waiting for players. Among them are SIRCAA, the cult laboratory X-16, and other familiar and completely new locations. The developers are not in a hurry to reveal all the surprises yet, but Skif’s words about “a whole city that shouldn’t even exist” hint that the Zone still has something to surprise.
Update 2.0 will significantly change the Zone in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
Along with Cost of Hope, on August 20, 2026, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will receive a free Update 2.0. It will be available to all players, regardless of the edition purchased.
“Return to the Zone” will be the largest comprehensive update to the game since its release. This time, the changes affected not only the technical part – the developers significantly redesigned the engine, and also added a number of long-awaited features. Among them are updated vegetation and lighting, new weapons and body kits, binoculars, a custom difficulty level and much more. We have already told you more about this on our CyberNews website.
It is not necessary to return to the game through a new passage: old saves will remain compatible with both Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope. At the same time, those who have not entered S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for a long time. 2, it is worth considering a new game – during the time the project was supported, a lot of new content and features appeared in it.
It is also recommended to remove modifications before installing updates and additions. Old versions of mods can conflict with the updated game, causing crashes, instability or performance problems.
To prepare modifications, the authors of the most popular projects have already received early access to the game within the Zone Kit closed beta. This gives them the opportunity to adapt their work to the release, so some of the updated mods may appear as early as August 20.
