GSC Game World explained why S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 wasn’t delayed for further development

Developing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl proved to be a true test of resilience for GSC Game World. The studio had to work amid a full-scale war, endure a fire at its Prague office, and deal with a data breach that created additional challenges for the team. Despite all these circumstances, the developers managed to bring the game to release in November 2024. However, at launch, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 had certain issues that still needed to be fixed.

After launch, players actively pointed out the shooter’s technical flaws, bugs, and certain mechanics that didn’t work at all as expected. There were particularly many questions regarding A-Life—one of the series’ key systems. At the same time, in the nearly two years since its release, GSC has significantly changed the game through numerous updates. Now the studio has explained why it didn’t delay the release by a few more years back then to bring the project to a much more polished state.

PC Gamer journalists spoke with GSC Game World CEO Yevhen Grygorovych. According to him, the decision to release S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in November 2024 was not solely due to financial circumstances. It was important for the team to get feedback from a large audience as soon as possible and understand in which direction to develop the game further.

Overtime did not guarantee a better result

During Gamescom 2026, Yevhen Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World and head of the game design department, explained to PC Gamer why the team couldn’t simply delay the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 for a few more years. According to him, the issue is much more complex than it might seem at first glance.

Grygorovych emphasized that it’s important for developers to receive audience feedback while the game is still in development. It’s this fresh feedback that helps them understand what truly needs to be changed and which direction to move in next. At the same time, two additional years of work on the project would have required enormous financial resources, which was not a desirable scenario for the studio.

Separately, the head of GSC touched on the state of the modern gaming market. According to him, developers are almost always forced to strike a balance between their own ambitions and their actual capabilities. It’s impossible to work on a game indefinitely, especially when the industry is experiencing a wave of layoffs and studio closures.

Therefore, the team tries not to chase an unattainable ideal, but to make the most of the resources and time it has. It was precisely the search for this balance, as Grygorovych explained, that became one of the factors influencing the decision to release S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
