The release date for the Cost of Hope DLC for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been announced

Stalkers, the day has finally come. GSC Game World has finally announced the release date for the story-driven expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The DLC, titled “Cost of Hope”, will be released on August 20, 2026.

“The approaches to the Center are more tightly sealed than ever. But, as is customary in the Zone, there are already those who know when and where the path will open. Around the campfires, people whisper about August 20. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope expansion is on its way, so it’s time to prepare for a new expedition deep into the Zone,” GSC Game World noted.

In the expansion, players will have to navigate a new chapter in the conflict between Duty and Freedom, as well as venture into previously inaccessible parts of the Zone. Among them are the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Both regions will feature their own hubs, as well as dozens of smaller locations with quests and activities. In total, completing the expansion will take dozens of hours.

Along with the release date, GSC Game World unveiled another new trailer for “Cost of Hope”. It features the fourth reactor unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant—which was actually destroyed in the 1986 accident—as well as SIRCAA and other locations familiar to fans of the series, such as “The Arch” in Chornobyl.

The footage also features the X-16 laboratory in Yantar—one of the locations directly linked to the Brain Burner. We’ll find out if that’s really what we saw in the trailer after the game’s release, so be sure to add S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope to your wishlist so you don’t miss the expansion. By the way, GSC Game World had already hinted at a return to this location earlier in an anthology created in collaboration with ATB.

It seems GSC Game World has plenty of nostalgic moments in store for fans. The developers won’t just unlock new areas—they’ll also take players back to familiar places, storylines, and mysteries that may be continued in “Cost of Hope”.

What Lies Behind “Cost of Hope”

We previously wrote about the Mysterious City, mind tricks, and new dangers in the Zone when GSC released the second trailer featuring Lyman. We also wrote about the echoes of “Shadows of Chernobyl”. No, this isn’t a repeat—it’s all about mind tricks, illusions, and the price of human desires. The expansion’s title—“Cost of Hope”—also hints at this. That’s precisely why the trailers’ references to mind tricks don’t seem coincidental.

It seems that GSC Game World is once again turning to one of the most intriguing themes in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe—the manipulation of human perception and the dangers of desires that the Zone is supposedly capable of fulfilling.

It looks like, Stalkers, we’re in for more than just new confrontations between familiar factions, a new female character named Mavka, and other surprises. GSC Game World, owned by Maksym Krippa, has prepared something truly massive and excitingespecially for longtime fans—not just of the second installment, but of the original trilogy as well.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe has always stood out for its compelling storyline. It’s not just a simple shooter, but a deep story based on a real-life tragedy. This universe draws in many people, and they all seek to find something of their own within the Zone. But what fans of the series will actually get—and whether all these speculations are true—we’ll find out on August 20.

The price of the expansion is not yet known. However, owners of the Ultimate Edition should receive the expansion for free.

Along with the release of the Cost of Hope expansion, scheduled for August 20, GSC Game World will release a major Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of ChornobylThe patch will upgrade the game to the latest version of the Unreal Engine 5 and will also add a significant amount of new content, improvements, and fixes.

The update will be available for free to all owners of the game.

In the coming weeks, GSC Game World will share more details about the Cost of Hope expansion and the major Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
